Most everyone wants to be healthy. We want to eat better and exercise more. There are a few reasons we don't, though. One that I want to address today is the lack of time. We're all super busy wearing many different hats each day, but the fact of the matter is- we have to choose to make time for our health and fitness.
If we want it bad enough, we will find a way. People get hung up on feeling the need to spend an hour, or two, working out every day. That is not the case! It is recommended that all adults exercise for 150 minutes a week at a moderate intensity to improve overall cardiovascular health. That works out to 30 minutes a day 5 days a week or 25 minutes a day 6 days a week.
For those of you who may not be accustomed to exercising at all, don't let those numbers intimidate you. Start with baby steps. Maybe its just 10 minutes a day, which could be broken up into 5 minutes in the morning and 5 minutes in the evening. Finding time throughout the day while at your desk to get up and move around a few minutes every few hours can be beneficial to you.
My advice: Have a plan!! Schedule exercise into your day like you would any other appointment. Whether it's 5 minutes a day or 30 minutes a few days, every little bit helps! I have 5 tips to help you with Time Management:
1. Know your goals. Make sure they are SMART goals (specific, measurable, attainable, relevant, and time-bound).
2. Have a plan. Schedule your workouts into your calendar or planner.
3. Have a back-up plan. Some days just don't go as planned. Have an idea of how you will stay committed in those situations.
4. Prioritize wisely. Find some things on your daily task list that can wait until after your workout. Or...instead of sacrificing family time, why not make family time exercise time. Head out for a walk or, if it's cold outside, how about an impromptu dance party?
5. Learn to say "No." Maybe you can say no to that evening tv time and use that DVR. Record your shows and reward yourself with a tv marathon for completing all your scheduled exercises during the week.
